Abstract

The article presents an abstract of the speech by Arthur L. Benson, director of teacher examinations of the Educational Teaching Service, delivered at the 34th Annual Spring Conference of the Eastern States Association of Professional School for Teachers in New York City on March 29, 1959. He discussed the role of objective and standardized tests in promoting the development of a prospective teacher. He also emphasized that teaching is a profession where teachers should have a body of knowledge that non-members don't have, and that the acquisition of this knowledge needs a relatively long period of study and preparation.
