Abstract

This issue of ETS Policy Notes (Volume 5, No. 3) looks at student achievement in mathematics from grade school through high school, based on data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The first article, "Growth Through School," reviews how the redesign of NAEP in 1984 permits better examination of the growth pattern in proficiency through school years and comparison of successive waves of cohorts. The second article, "How Achievement Varies," looks at the range of scores in NAEP mathematic assessments, rather than the average, to determine student proficiency. The third article, "State Assessments: Home and School Differences," looks at the relationship between the socioeconomic status of student families and educational outcomes.
