Abstract

This issue of ETS Policy Notes (Volume 6, No. 2) reviews some promising strategies designed to increase the supply of minority teachers and prepare all teachers to work with students of many different races, cultures, and backgrounds. These strategies are being piloted in a series of programs across the country. The evidence suggests that there are many students of color who wish to become teachers. Several of the programs described in this issue said they had to turn down a large number of qualified applicants for lack of space or funds. Further, those who did participate in the various programs were described by faculty and staff as highly motivated and resourceful. It appears that these prospective teachers not only draw a great deal from the educational opportunities made available to them, they also have much to offer to other students and to those who are teaching them.
