Abstract
The sixth issue of ETS Research Spotlight focuses on a report highlighting our long-term Research & Development initiative — Cognitively Based Assessment of, for, and as Learning (CBAL™). We are engaging in this complex initiative because we believe that existing approaches to K–12 accountability assessment could be markedly improved. This issue features a synopsis of an ETS Research Report by Randy Bennett, ETS’s Norman O. Frederiksen Chair in Assessment Innovation. The report summarizes the results of research from more than 10,000 online CBAL pilot administrations conducted between 2007 and 2010. The report also demonstrates the complex technical issues involved in assessment innovation — issues we must consider if we are to achieve meaningful changes in consequential educational assessment.
