Abstract

This guide focuses on helping teachers identify the essential language knowledge and skills embedded in English language proficiency (ELP) standards (e.g., language functions, language modalities, language processing levels, and pragmatic arrangements) and, by extension, academic content standards and other aligned pedagogical materials. This practitioner guide will be useful to school-site English learner (EL)1 coordinators and district English as a second language (ESL) staff for use in professional learning aimed at supporting general education teachers with the academic learning and language development of multilingual learners.
