Abstract

A plan is proposed for studying the extent to which coaching for the CEEB exams affects students' scores and if coaching affects actual achievement in college, rather than just test scores. An interviewer or interviewers will visit each of twenty or more schools and ask directly what special "preparation for College Board Exams," if any, is used and the nature and amount of coaching. A special administration of the SAT will be given at each of the schools to seniors at the beginning of the school year, and the following year the freshman grades of the same students will be obtained from the colleges fed by the selected schools. Comparisons will then be made between groups from coaching schools and groups from non-coaching schools. The results would show the extent to which coaching was successful in improving SAT scores and the extent to which the improvement was valid in predicting college success. The steps and time schedule planned for the study are also outlined.
