This paper was part of a "Symposium To Study Needed Characteristics of Test Scores, Norms, and Score Reports for More Effective Use," at the 4th Annual Western Regional Conference on Testing Problems in Los Angeles. Most of the statistical machinery made available by publishers for the interpretation of test scores is intended for a type of interpretation that is restricted in at least two respects: statistical machinery is most commonly devised for a competitive interpretation, and statistical machinery tends to restrict to a static interpretation of test scores. The author suggests that future test publishers will find they wish to provide statistical aids appropriate for types of interpretation.
