Abstract

This paper was presented at the American Psychological Association in Chicago in September 1960. The author considered developments over the previous 25 years in the area of measurement and mental abilities and found a tremendous increase in the precision of dealing with psychological tests: the relationship between the ability measured and the test score, in methods of item analysis, in the differentiation and classification of various methods of dealing with reliability. He noted that the biggest development has been the change from the emphasis on single general intelligence to the differentiation of a large number of different aptitudes made possible by the development of factor analysis.
