Abstract
Theoretical interpretations of punishment have debated whether or not punishment decreases the "strength" of the punished response. The present paper argues that punishment increases response strength in that it increases the learner's ability to perform the punished response. Supporting evidence from a modified stylus maze experiment (human Ss) is presented.
