Abstract

A sample of 203 parents of preschool children served as respondents for a 60-item questionnaire. The items dealt with parental practices which previous research findings cite as influential in childhood cognitive development. The items were factor analyzed and six factors extracted: (1) Willingness to devote time to the child, (2) Parental guidance, (3) Aspiration for achievement, (4) Rejection vs. Acceptance, (5) Provision for the child's needs, and (6) Dependence upon external resources. Scale scores derived from the factors were correlated with family (demographic) characteristics.
