Abstract

The purpose of this brief report is to suggest the desirability of summary scales for the 1963 edition of the Background and Experience Questionnaire (BEQ). The purpose of the BEQ was "to measure the behavior and interests of adolescents as they reflect an orientation toward either the adult or the adolescent culture". The items of the BEQ emphasized the differences in the values, beliefs, and norms characterising each orientation. Each item had a dual classification in terms of the skill requirements and the content of the activity it described. With skill and content each divided into two categories, each item was identified as high or medium or low in level.
