Abstract

This study was begun in 1962 to provide more information about the nature and function of the selection system operating in Rhodesia. At first, only limited follow-up was considered possible but the study has been extended to follow the progress of African pupils systematically through the secondary school system. A parallel study was begun in Uganda at the same time and the possibility of comparison of two systems of education has been realized through close cooperation and detailed planning. This paper concentrates on central African work with two main aims: (a) to provide information about the kind of tests used and their utility; (b) to provide an outline of methods used so that future studies may evaluate the model implied.
