Abstract

In this paper twelve different methods of using student data to assess school effectiveness are classified and described. A rational for the classification scheme is developed based on (a) one-shot, cross-sectional, or longitudinal data and (b) the presence or absence of a comparison group; and symbolic codes for the twelve methods are given. Examples of each method are presented together with a brief discussion of some of the key issues surrounding the use of the method. (23pp.)
