Abstract
Seven steps in using volunteer work as a route to a career are described. They are: 1) self evaluation; 2) selecting relevant volunteer work experience; 3) learning from volunteer work; 4) documenting your skills; 5) selecting related paid employment; 6) convincing potential employers of volunteer work relevance; and 7) starting up the career ladder. A hypothetical case, based on the CAEL (Council for the Advancement of Experiential Learning) portfolio is used as an example of how one person can go about this process. The portfolio is included in an appendix.
