Abstract

Seven steps in using volunteer work as a route to a career are described. They are: 1) self evaluation; 2) selecting relevant volunteer work experience; 3) learning from volunteer work; 4) documenting your skills; 5) selecting related paid employment; 6) convincing potential employers of volunteer work relevance; and 7) starting up the career ladder. A hypothetical case, based on the CAEL (Council for the Advancement of Experiential Learning) portfolio is used as an example of how one person can go about this process.
