Charles W. Gould inspired and sponsored "A Study of American Intelligence" by Carl C. Brigham. Gould's earlier book, "America, A Family Affair," is discussed as a source for the ideas which influenced Brigham's work. Gould believed that the primary cause for the decline of great civilizations was a failure to maintain racial purity and he urged "old stock" Americans to stop the influx of foreigners. His ideas and rhetoric are echoed in Brigham's "A Study of American Intelligence."
