Abstract
This report begins by presenting a typology of standards imposed by education decision-makers at the state, district, and local levels. It then describes state-prescribed educational standards in effect in the 1984-85 school year in each of the 50 states. These profiles cover student standards (testing, high school graduation requirements, and attendance), teacher standards (teacher preparation, certification and relicensing, and staff development), and school and school district standards (length of the school year, length of the school day and curriculum mandates). The report also includes a summary of the policies in effect across the 50 states and changes made by the states.
