Abstract

To gather information for its response to the issue whether to allow the use of hand-held calculators on standardized mathematics tests, the staff at Educational Testing Service, under the sponsorship of the College Board, developed a questionnaire to poll teachers of college-level mathematics about calculator and microcomputer use in freshman mathematics courses. The questionnaire, sent to college mathematics departments, asked faculty members to describe the extent to which students in their courses use calculators and microcomputers and to register their opinions about allowing students to use these instruments on the Mathematics Achievement Tests and the Advanced Placement Examinations in Mathematics of the College Board.
