Abstract
This paper describes an experimental program of interactive assessment and instruction called GUIDES to Learning and Instruction. The program was designed for instruction in college level remedial and developmental programs and has been experimentally implemented in four colleges. By the use of micro-computer administration of measurement, the program provides sustained involvement in realistic tasks, uses a variety of response formats, including free response, probes for explanations of poor performance, gives feedback and second tries, and communicates to students and instructors. The paper discusses conclusions from implementation research regarding patterns of use, validity for instruction, and roles of instructors. (27pp.)
