Abstract

This Policy Information Report discusses the fact that the United States is among the worst countries in the industrial world at helping students who don't go on to college make the transition from school to work. The report considers student work during high school and the differences between skills acquired in the classroom and those needed at the workplace. It also reviews the information-processing skills of high school graduates, new efforts to integrate academic and vocational education, and the weakness of linkages between school and the workplace.
