Abstract

The National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) was established in 1981 to take responsibility for certification of therapeutic recreation personnel. The Council is considering adding a written test of professional knowledge to the set of requirements for certification, requiring a job analysis of the profession of Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. The information derived from the job analysis will be used to develop a "blueprint" or set of test specifications which defines the content of the examination. The content is linked to the tasks the professional performs, thereby ensuring that the questions will demonstrate the job-relatedness of the examination. The job analysis of the profession of Therapeutic Recreation Specialist reported in this study was conducted by ETS at the request of NCTRC. The procedures used involved an interactive process that combined 1) the job analysis expertise of ETS staff members; 2) the professional knowledge of a select Advisory Committee made up of prominent members of the profession ; and 3)the judgments of a large nationwide sample of persons certified in the field of Therapeutic Recreation.
