Abstract

Three graphic memorials are described: 1) the Vietnam memorial; 2) an 1869 graph by Charles Joseph Minard depicting the course of Napoleon's invasion of Russia in June-December of 1812, causing a loss of 412,000 of the original 422,000 French soldiers; and 3) a map and graph of the paths of a fire and fire fighting crew in Mann Gulch Montana, August 5, 1949--a fire which cost the lives of 13 of the 16 crew members sent in to fight it. The emotional impact and the presentation of data contained in all three graphics, especially in the third, are described.
