Abstract
(b) the enormous drop in U.S. math performance between 4th and 8th grade relative to other nations suggests the need for increasing the amount of mathematics covered between 4th and 8th grade which might be accomplished by accelerating curriculum and raising standards. We are not unaware of the conflicting nature of these two findings, but triage decisions such as these are what make modern educational policymaking so difficult.
