Abstract

The author examines cartoons from the New Yorker that refer to statistical graphics. The messages conveyed by these graphics are examined for accuracy. The author discusses the importance of choosing a proper scale for a graph, and sources of information on this subject are discussed. The report contains several examples of William Playfair's graphs, which are discussed in terms of the scales chosen by Playfair to represent the data.
