Abstract
A data display from the New York Times (June 22, 1997, page 24 of the Women's Health Section) contains five graphs, three of which have serious flaws. The three errors identified are: nonlinear time, and inconsistent metaphor, and Simpson's paradox and heart disease. This report examines these flaws and provides other examples of data distorted by print media.
