Abstract

Together with advances in cognitive and measurement science, the technology will permit the transformation of assessment in fundamental ways. Five assessment areas are discussed: test design, item generation, task presentation, scoring, and testing purpose and location. For each area, key assessment innovations are identified, its importance is noted, attention is called to the issues it raises, speculation is given about the innovation's eventual effects, and whom to watch as the innovation moves forward.
