Abstract

The 1997 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Arts Assessment monitored the performance of students in three disciplines: Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts. The assessment measured students’ literacy in the arts through their knowledge and skill in creating, performing, and responding to challenging, innovative test exercises. Nearly 6,500 public- and nonpublic-school eighth graders from 268 schools across the United States were assessed. This report discusses the instruments, sample design, field operations, data collection, scoring, and data analysis procedures that led to the results reported by the Department of Education Institute of Education Science’s National Center for Education Statistics on the NAEP Web site.
