This pilot project provided a setting for developing and field testing an early childhood story telling and retelling intervention for children in an urban, low-income community. The intervention included guidelines for using questioning strategies during group reading as well as some ways to assess children’s responses to different questioning strategies and instructional interventions for individuals and small groups. Two urban preschools participated in the pilot during the spring of 2005; one teacher from each center used the materials over a 3-month period and provided feedback about the intervention strategies and materials.
