How to Reschedule Your TOEFL Exam: A Brief Guide

January 28, 2026

how to reschedule

The TOEFL iBT® is a fantastic way to verify your English language skills to pass the admissions process for university. The test assesses your skills in 4 sections: Reading, Speaking, Writing, and Listening, allowing you to showcase your English skills in several areas.

You can book your TOEFL iBT online by creating an account or by logging in to your account. Once you’ve chosen your time and date, you’ll be sent a confirmation email.

However, if needed, you can choose to reschedule your test, or it could be postponed by TOEFL. Here’s a breakdown of how to reschedule your TOEFL exam should you need to.

How to reschedule your TOEFL exam

There are several reasons why your TOEFL exam could be rescheduled including weather conditions, technology challenges, or personal circumstances.

In certain situations, ETS may reschedule your TOEFL exam before the test date. If this occurs, you can log into your account to choose a new test date. TOEFL will always contact you prior to your test date if your exam is rescheduled. That said, if you arrive at a test center to find your test has been cancelled, you can reschedule your exam with no additional charge or request a full refund.

If you want to claim a refund, you need to submit all documented travel expenses within 30 days of your original test date.

Why reschedule your TOEFL exam?

There are a range of reasons why you might need to reschedule your TOEFL exam, from health concerns to technical issues. Here are some of the most common reasons students modify their exam date.

Health concerns: Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to control your health. Some students postpone their exam date due to poor health which could influence their performance.

Personal circumstances: Unexpected personal or family circumstances may impact your ability to focus on the day, forcing you to postpone.

Technical issues: Poor weather can impact your Wi-Fi, causing network instability, preventing you from taking the test.

Rescheduling your TOEFL test: A step-by-step process

The easiest way to reschedule your TOEFL test is through your ETS account. Alternatively, you can phone the Regional Registration Centre (RRC).

If you need to reschedule, this should be completed at least four full days before your scheduled test date. If you submit later than four days before the exam, the test cost will not be refunded. Furthermore, you cannot reschedule your test through regular email or at the test center.

To reschedule, you will need the following documents:

  • TOEFL program appointment number
  • The exact name used during the registration
  • Date of Birth
  • Mailing address
  • Daytime phone number
  • Email ID
  • Original test date
  • A reason for wanting to reschedule the exam

Once you have all the documents required, you can begin your rescheduling process.

  1. Login to your account. If you don’t have an account, create one on the official TOEFL website

  2. Head to your Registration section where you’ll find the details about your current booking

  3. Click on the reschedule option and choose a new date and location

  4. Pay the applicable rescheduling charge. This will vary based on several factors such as date of rescheduling and your reason

  5. Confirm your new date and test location

  6. Once confirmed, you'll receive a confirmation email which will include your revised test information

Rescheduling fees for the TOEFL test

The fees for rescheduling your TOEFL test vary based on several variables.

Geographic location: Your rescheduling fee will vary based on the country you booked your test in. You can find more information about the fee for your country on the TOEFL website or by contacting your local test center.

Time: The earlier you reschedule your TOEFL test, the lower the fees. If you reschedule just days before, your test fees can increase to around $100.

Extenuating circumstances: During circumstances such as poor health, weather, or a family emergency, the cost of rescheduling your TOEFL exam may be removed.

Before rescheduling, it’s important that you fully understand the refund policy. Depending on your reason for cancelling and the cancellation timeframe, you could receive a refund.

Rescheduling timeframes

If you want to reschedule your TOEFL test without paying higher fees than you need to understand the different rescheduling timeframes.

Early rescheduling (7+ days before the exam): Rescheduling a week before your test will result in lower rescheduling prices.

Late rescheduling (4–6 days before the exam): Late rescheduling can result in higher fees and limited booking availability.

Last-minute rescheduling (less than three days before the exam): Rescheduling days before the exam is not always an option and will result in the highest fees.

Important rescheduling factors to consider

Before you choose to reschedule your TOEFL test, you need to consider several factors rescheduling could impact.

University deadlines: Double check your university deadlines to ensure your new exam date gives you adequate time to complete your application.

Rescheduling costs: Before rescheduling check, you understand all financial implications.

Booking availability: If you’re choosing to take your test at an exam center, check the booking availability for exam centers near you to ensure you can find a date that aligns with your schedule.

TOEFL test rescheduling: Built for you

Unfortunately, you might not always be able to take your TOEFL test. Unexpected circumstances may occur, or poor health could prevent you from feeling your best. Luckily, rescheduling your test is simple.

The process is designed to be as easy as possible and can be completed in just a few minutes.

That said, if you need additional support, you can find it on the official TOEFL website below:
