Here are the types of tasks you'll see in the listening section of the TOEFL Essentials test.

Here, you will listen to a question or statement from a short conversation you're having with another person.

Who's your favorite basketball player?

Then choose the best response.

For all other tasks, you're listening in different situations and answering questions about what you heard.

There are conversations, like this one at a hotel reception desk.

Welcome to Rosewood Hotel.

Hello. I have a reservation. My family name's Clark.

For two nights?

Yes, that's right.

Excellent. Can I have your passport please?

Sure. Here you are.

There are two questions for each conversation.

There are short academic-related announcements, like this one about registering for classes.

Next, let's talk about registering for classes. You can select the classes that you want to take using our online course catalog. You can also begin your registration process on the registration website. But, and this is very important, your registration will not be complete until you have made an appointment with your academic advisor and your advisor has approved your class schedule. You'll find your academic advisor's name and contact information when you log in to the registration site.

There are two questions for each announcement.

And there are academic talks, which may be about science, history, art, business, or other subjects.

This one is about spider silk.

In last week's class about spiders, we discovered that there are over 40,000 species of spider, and they're found all over the world on six of the seven continents. We also noted spiders' ability to spin silken webs to capture prey. Today, let's talk about a surprising benefit of spider silk for humankind. Have you ever accidentally walked into a spider web and discovered how difficult it is to get that silken material off of your skin? Spider silk is thinner than a human hair, and yet for its weight stronger than steel...

There are four questions about each academic talk.
