Scoring for the TOEFL ITP® Tests

Reliable Scoring

Digital tests are scored locally. Unofficial scores and rosters are available at the test center immediately upon completion of the test. Official score reports are sent out approximately 7 days after the test date.

Paper tests are scored by ETS or by your local ETS TOEFL ITP® Associate. Score reports are sent out approximately 7 days after receipt of the answer sheets.

Detailed Score Reports

All TOEFL ITP score reports include:

  • individual information for your program to distribute to students
  • institutional information and a score roster for internal use only
  • total scores and section scores

Segmenting the scores by section provides greater insight into which skills need more work. This enables you to tailor your instruction accordingly and better meet the needs of each student.

Score Validity

TOEFL ITP scores are valid for 2 years. Because language proficiency can change considerably in a relatively short period of time, scores more than 2 years old cannot be reported or verified.

Interpreting Scores

To help you interpret TOEFL ITP scores, ETS has conducted multiple studies, including a Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) mapping study and a score descriptor study.

Test and Score Data Summaries

The TOEFL ITP® Test and Score Data Summaries contain data on the performance of examinees who took a TOEFL ITP test between January and December of a calendar year.
