Scoring

The TOEFL Junior® Speaking test is scored by ETS-trained human raters. Please refer to the TOEFL Junior® Speaking Scoring Guide for a better understanding of the scoring methodology.

Test Scores

The table below shows the TOEFL Junior Speaking test scores, performance descriptors and Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) levels. Performance descriptors represent performance in middle schools using English for instruction, and show what a typical student at that level can do.

14–16 Almost always produces vocabulary and grammar that is accurate, varied and effective, and always understandable to listeners. B2
11–13 Usually produces vocabulary and grammar that is accurate and effective, and speech that is usually understandable to listeners. B1
8–10 Produces speech that is at times understandable to listeners. A2
Below 8 Produces basic vocabulary and simple grammatical structures. Below A2

Score Reports

The TOEFL Junior Speaking test score report provides a score range from 0–16. These scores are linked to the scoring guide used to score Speaking tasks to help teachers, students and parents better understand the meaning of the scores. The test scores are accompanied by performance descriptors.

TOEFL Junior Speaking Test Certificate of Achievement

In addition to a score report, the TOEFL Junior program also offers certificates of achievement based on scores and CEFR levels that you can award to your students. It's one way to provide students and parents with a sense of accomplishment.
