Abstract
The methods of successive intervals and paired comparisons in which the standard deviations of the stimuli are equal are briefly discussed. It is demonstrated that "there are many occasions for utilizing the method of successive intervals or paired comparisons, assuming unequal standard deviations... and that a least squares solution for this case would be useful in many different experimental situations." This paper derives and illustrates a least squares solution assuming these unequal standard deviations for both successive intervals and paired comparisons. (JGL)
