The relationship between the field dependence dimension and the influence of visual frameworks on the perception of size was examined. Two spatial arrangements were used so that the influence of the frame would lead to an illusion in one instance and a more veridical response in the other. While the relatively field dependent subjects showed a greater error in the illusion condition, they showed more veridical size judgments in the condition in which use of the visual framework could contribute to more accurate size matching. Field dependence and field independence are viewed as perceptual strategies, each of which may be adaptive in certain situations. (16pp.)
