Abstract
A set of 40 mathematics items was developed, intended for high school students who had completed at least one high school course in each of algebra and plane geometry. Each item was supplemented by a sequence of hints which progressively structured the problem for the examinee. Nine items were modified, transforming their original hints into multiple-choice questions. These items were administered using latent image materials to give examinees feedback regarding the correctness of their responses and to direct them to subseqent hints. Indices descriptive of examinee response to the items and their associated hints were developed and related to various academic, attitudinal, and other personal characteristics of the examinees.
