Abstract
This review gives a brief historical account of the development of graphics as a data analytic tool and covers developments since the seventies in some detail. The paper illustrates the appropriate use of such methods as stem and leaf diagrams, box plots, enhanced scatter-plots, tables, glyphs in the graphic display, and interpretation of univariate, bivariate, and multivariate data. The authors stress the potential of graphics to aid not only in the description of hypotheses, but in the generation of hypotheses concerning the behavior of data, thus serving to uncover and explain psychological phenomena.
