TOEFL® Essentials™ test Overview

Video duration: 3:52

NARRATOR: If you're choosing an English test, only one has the perfect combination of the convenience you want and the quality universities trust, the TOEFL® Essentials™ test.

TOEFL Essentials was designed for you by the same experts at ETS that created the TOEFL iBT® test. It's trusted by universities worldwide. And the list of institutions that accept TOEFL Essentials continues to grow.

The TOEFL Essentials test measures the four key skills of language proficiency—listening, reading, writing, and speaking. It has a friendly format with short, focused tasks to keep you engaged and help you do your best. It adapts to you with a multistage adaptive design that adjusts the questions to match your skill level.

TOEFL Essentials combines both academic and general English. So it shows your skills for the classroom and other important settings, like interviews and internships. And you take it conveniently from home, monitored by a live human proctor throughout the test, all in about 90 minutes at about half the price of other major English tests.

Each section in the TOEFL Essentials test has questions that effectively measure your English abilities. For listening, you answer questions about things you hear, like conversations, announcements, and academic talks.

In the reading section, you read texts from both academic and nonacademic sources and answer questions about them.

For writing, you will be asked to build sentences from given words. Then you have two writing tasks, each with a specific communication purpose.

In the speaking section, some tasks include reading aloud and repeating what you hear. Then you have a virtual interview, where you respond to several questions.

NARRATOR: At the end of your TOEFL Essentials test, you record your personal video statement, which gives you an opportunity to tell more about yourself beyond the scored parts of the test. The recording takes about five minutes. And you answer two questions, one about yourself and one where you give your opinion on a given topic. You can rerecord each response once if you need to.

Before you leave the testing room, you can view your unofficial reading and listening scores on-screen. These scores can give an early indication of how you did on the test.

You can view your official scores in your TOEFL account about six days after the test. Scores for the TOEFL Essentials test are measured in bands, from 1 to 12, for each section. Your overall score is the average of the four section scores rounded to the nearest half-band. All score reports include MyBest® scores, which are the highest overall section scores from all of your TOEFL Essentials tests in the last two years.

Once you've decided that TOEFL Essentials is right for you, it's time to register. Log in to your TOEFL® account to find a date and time that fits your schedule. Test appointments are available around the clock on designated testing days.

Now you're on your way to fulfilling your dreams. The convenience you want, the quality institutions trust—that's the TOEFL Essentials test.
