Starting in 2026, students will receive overall and section scores on an updated 1- 6 scale, with a more intuitive link to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

This updated scale will more closely align with most students’ prior English learning and assessment journeys, while offering more consistent scoring across sections and simplifying score interpretation for students, teachers, and institutions. 

Over 13,000 universities and institutions in more than 160 countries accept TOEFL scores, and this update makes them even easier to use and trust.
