INSTRUCTOR 3: Listen to a conversation between two students. As you listen, think about-- what problem are they discussing? What are the two solutions they talk about?

STUDENT: Hey, Lisa. Have you finished that paper for our literature class, the one that's due tomorrow?

LISA: Just about. I still have to do a little more work on it today.

STUDENT: That's lucky. I don't have as much done as I should, and on top of that, I kind of lost the novel we're supposed to write about?

LISA: What do you mean, kind of?

STUDENT: Well, I had a doctor's appointment this morning, and I took the book with me so I could work on it while I was waiting, but do you believe I left it there.

LISA: Oh, no.

STUDENT: I'm so mad at myself. I had written a bunch of notes in the book, too, ideas for the paper.

LISA: Oh, wow. Aren't you going to go back and get it?

STUDENT: Yeah, I just called the office, and, sure enough, they have it.

LISA: Well, that's good. So you can get it in time to finish the paper today, right?

STUDENT: Well, my friend drove me there for the appointment since I don't have a car and there's no bus or anything, so I'd have to ask him to give me a ride again.

LISA: Oh, OK, do you think he'd mind?

STUDENT: I'm sure he'd do it, but he's in class for the rest of the afternoon. That's a long time to wait. That might not leave me enough time to finish the paper by tomorrow. I really need to work on it this afternoon, you know?

LISA: Yeah, but you need the book.

STUDENT: I was thinking maybe it'd be better if I just buy a new copy of the book at the bookstore.

LISA: Yeah, well, that would be faster. The campus bookstore will have it. And since it's a paperback, it's not too expensive.

STUDENT: Right. The only thing is I wrote notes in my copy of the book, things I was thinking about while I was reading. I marked some pages with important quotes, that kind of thing, and that would be really helpful for writing the paper.
